Europe 1944 Mini Campaign – AAR Wednesday 6th March 2019

Battle 1 was fought over a No man’s land using scenario 1 “The Patrol” scenario.  The map was set up  with two imposing rock features surrounded by hedges and fields.  Although the terrain was basic both commanders would have to keep a vigilant eye out for sneaky lines of sight that would threaten their forces.

Table setup for CoC Game 06/03/2019
Table Seetup

Colin played the Allies who started the battle as the attacker having the higher Force moral (9).

Ivan played the Germans with a force moral of 8.

The two forces were each using the Recon force from their pool of company assets (see campaign order of battle) with an additional 8 Support points.

Colin’s force as per the order of battle consisted of

4 x Universal Carriers

1 x Senior leader

2 x Junior Leaders

4 x Bren LMG Teams (1 per UC)

Colin chose to bring an Adjutant, two PIAT Teams and a Sniper team

British units deploy to the Battlefield.

Ivan’s forces as per the order of battle consisted of

3 x SdKfz 250’s

1 x Senior Leader

2 x Junior Leaders

3 x LMG teams (1 per 250)

His support points were used to purchase an Adjutant and a Panzer III Flamm Tank (Thanks Dave!)

The Patrol phase was completed leaving both forces with a Jump of point (JOP) on each flank and one central.  The Brits had pushed the Germans back to the final third of the table meaning the Brits JOPs were near the half way mark already gaining ground in no man’s land

A few changes to the rules by mutual consent allowed both forces to deploy their recon units within 6“ of JOPs instead of bringing them on via the table edge hence why the patrol phase was key.

The scenario began with Colin deploying two of his UC and a PIAT Team then Ivan brought on his whole force placing them on over watch, the Germans opting to take a cautious approach which would last the entire skirmish.

Colin deployed the rest of his forces including the sniper on his left flank with excellent line of sight he then made his way forward attempting to take the high ground trying to spot the German Recon force without tripping their Over watch and bringing a whole world of hurt down on himself

Colin’s sniper was activated and caused a KIA with one shot against the LMG gunner of the German Senior leader’s 250 that would certainly teach him for poking his head up to see if the Brits were in line of sight.

Unfortunately for the British sniper the unit he hit was on over watch and although failed to spot him the first time, further sniper shots which were less accurate but creating shock caused the Germans to pinpoint his position with two of the 250’s LMG top gunners this brought a swift and deadly response from the Germans who managed to Kill the sniper after a few attempts (they took their time getting their aim in) unlucky for the Brits this caused a -2 Force moral drop on the subsequent bad things happening roll meaning the Brits FM was now at 7

The Germans seemed very content to sit back on overwatch knowing that their Flamm Panzer had a deadly 36” range.  This proved to be a potentially deadly problem for the Brits who tried very hard to work all angles to get a PIAT Team to shot at the tank but couldn’t risk the losses this might cause.  This meant the game turned into a stalemate and with the Germans on a higher FM, lead them to a victory.

The Campaign now moves on to the next scenario on the ladder which is scenario 2 “The Probe”.  The Germans pushed the Brits back and are now  the attacker with the initiative in the next game.

Scenario Conclusion

The Game worked well with the ability to use the JOPs instead of the edge of the table.  If the game had been a draw it would have been replayed as a BCoC game using all surviving units plus a full infantry Platoon for each side.

Allies

As the Allies Lost they get an addition 3 support points to add to their pool.  They are the defender in the next game and will have 10 Support points to spend on anything that is available.   No Forward observers (FO) can be chosen.   With the additional 3 points they can purchase support from lists 1-3.  They also get to keep the 2 surviving PIAT Teams for the next battle only after which the points will go back in to the British pool.

Germans

As the Germans won they get an additional 8pts to add to their support point pool, They also go into the next game as the Attacker with the first phase initiative on both the patrol phase and Game.  They will have 25pts to spend on anything apart from a FO and they will be allowed to field their Panzer 3 Flamm tank and will be able to bring one 250 crew with them however, they will need to dice for the 250 to turn up (see the Scenario rules)
